Chipotle International Day of Action

July 25, 2012

We begin this photo report for the Chipotle International Day of Action in New York City, where the Community/Farmworker Alliance held not one but two events in as many days!

On Tuesday, July 24th members of CFA, joined by Oscar Otzoy of CIW marched with over one thousand low wage workers as part of a #nyrising action to call on employers to respect their employees and pay them a living wage. As part of the action, the marchers gathered at Chipotle demanding farmworker justice.

The next day, as Fair Food activists took action across the country, over 50 community members joined Oscar to hold a picket in front of a Chipotle restaurant and deliver hundreds of signed postcards expressing support for the campaign.

As new Chipotle's continue to open in New York City, CFA promises to "keep the pressure up to let them know that until they serve food with real integrity, we won't stop knocking at the door!"

From New York, we hop across the Atlantic to London, where Chipotle has recently announced plans to expand into the European market. However, London Fair Food activists are already on the ground and have made clear their intention to meet the company's expansion with a growing movement for Fair Food in the UK!

Back in Florida, a strong contingent of students, people of faith and labor activists made their presence similarly felt at a Gainesville Chipotle in the heart of Gator country...

... while members of the CIW joined the demonstration in nearby Naples.

Further north along the Gulf Coast, in Sarasota, Florida, students from New College joined local residents to brave the Florida heat and flock to their local Chipotle along the Tamiami Trail brimming with rush-hour traffic.

In Austin, TX a spirited group from the Workers Defense Project joined community members in a lively (and colorful!) rally of more than 30 people that hit Chipotle during the lunch-time rush.
When Chipotle recently opened its doors in Oakland, CA , Oakland residents united under the slogan, "No Chipocrisy in our Hood." They made it clear they wouldn't stand for such Chipocrisy until the restaurant chain decided to commit to farmworker rights.

(And if you haven't heard it already, check out the new track by resident Fair Food troubador Liz Fitzgerald titled, "Chipotle's Going Down!").

The Oakland action also garnered the attention of CivilEats:"In Oakland, protesters slowly amassed, holding signs pleading that 'if Chipotle loves small farms then they should also love their farmworkers.' Primarily students and young adults, the group quickly moved down the narrow pathways of the farmers’ market along Grand Avenue to accumulate more supporters. In the end, they convened at the newly opened Chipotle food chain along Lakeshore Avenue to form a picket line of protestors."

In Minneapolis, MN a coalition of local organizations – including the Instituate for Agriculture and Trade Policy, the Land Stewardship Project, and El Centro de Trabajadores Unidos en Lucha – shared more than 500 signatures they had collected from Minneapolis residents demanding that Chipotle sign a Fair Food Agreement now.
In Cincinnati, OH the Fair Food delegation made sure to visit all of the city's Chipotle locations!

In Ann Arbor, MI Chipotle customers and passers-by were greeted by an enthusiastic group of students and members of the Interfaith Council for Peace and Justice.

In Boston, MA members of the Chefs Collaborative and Bostonians took their grievances with Chipotle to their local manager.

Students in Nashville, TN were among the many to visit their local Chipotle on Wednesday...

... As were students in Columbus, OH.

In Ames, IA, a group who had gathered for the Rooted in Community youth summit made their way to the local Chipotle to add their voices to the ever-growing chorus for Fair Food.
And finally, in Baltimore, MD, friends from United Workers got in on the fun by speaking with a local manager. The group reported, "We delivered the letter to the manager [pictured above] and handed out 100 letters and materials to people walking by at the Inner Harbor. We also managed to get three customers to deliver their own letters directly to the manager after the signed it."

And there it is – a highlight of some of the actions around the country in cities both familiar and new to the Campaign for Fair Food!

Stay tuned in the weeks ahead for more developments as Fair Food activists build on the Day of Action for sustained pressure heading into this fall!
